Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

AutoCAD mobile apps
In 2008 Autodesk introduced AutoCAD mobile apps (or iPad apps, as they are also known) for the iPad. The first iPad apps were iPad-only versions of AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT. Version 2009.1 was the first to support both the iPad and Mac. With version 2009.2, Mac OS X support was added and version 2009.3 added support for Windows Mobile, Android, iOS and Blackberry smartphones. AutoCAD 2009.3 introduced native Excel import and conversion functions. AutoCAD 2010 added new features, the ability to import and export to a wide variety of file formats, additional spreadsheet functions, and many other improvements. AutoCAD 2012 includes enhancements to the 3D engine, improved native Excel import and conversion functions, and new vector and raster drawing tools. In 2013, AutoCAD LT for iPad was released as the first iPad-only version.
AutoCAD mobile apps and web apps provide the following features:
Create accurate drawings with the easy-to-use features of Autodesk® AutoCAD® software, including direct manipulation of 2D and 3D objects, tools that automatically insert annotation and production features, and more than 100 2D and 3D drawing tools.
Paint and animate
Warm up to the AutoCAD mobile app for iPad with basic painting, basic animation, and easy customizations.
Wrap the exact functionality of your desktop design software into an easy-to-use drawing and editing tool. Draw complex 2D and 3D objects, edit text, add dimensions, annotate with lines, arrows, and other production features.
Quickly and efficiently create drawings for mobile device or desktop by converting existing drawings into and out of Autodesk® DWG® (Drafting & Web™) or DWF® (Design Web Format) files and merging files and layers.
Make changes to your drawings without having to redraw, creating, for example, more detailed drawings.
Share your work with others. Create email attachments with a single click. Easily access and work with the AutoCAD files of colleagues, workgroups, and project collaborators.
In addition to the iPad version, AutoCAD mobile apps are also available for Android and the iPhone, and are supported by a range of other mobile operating systems such as Windows Mobile,

Alternate Operating Systems
Historically, AutoCAD ran only on Windows; however, in the last three versions it also runs on Linux and Mac OS X using an open source software layer called WINGs (Windows Interface for NX/UNIX/Linux).
In version 2015 a full desktop version of AutoCAD was made available for Linux and Mac OS X. In 2017, the full Linux version was superseded by a shell script which converts the full Linux edition into a version that runs on other operating systems including Windows. In 2019 a newer cross platform version is available as well as ports to Android and iOS.
When AutoCAD was ported to the Mac, a copy of Adobe Acrobat was also necessary for full AutoCAD functionality. As a result, most of the functionality now runs on both Windows and Mac. An updated version of the full desktop AutoCAD will be available for Mac in version 2016.
The first version of AutoCAD to include linear interpolation was AutoCAD 2.0, first released in December 1980.
AutoCAD 2.1, released in May 1981, is recognized as a major milestone in CAD software. It was the first version to include an integrated drawing editor that could be used without AutoCAD or PLATO, and it included the world’s first interactive perspective view.
AutoCAD 3.0, released in August 1981, also introduced the concept of “layer support”, providing direct commands for the automatic creation of layers, and a preview function.
AutoCAD 3.1, released in December 1981, included direct commands for the creation of blocks (similar to blocks in the drafting system of Plimsoll Peabody & Co), such as 1×1, 2×1, and 1×2 blocks, which were very popular in the United States and Canada.
In 1986, AutoCAD 3.5 was released.
AutoCAD 3.5 introduced the FreeHand tool, which created a host of new commands such as Extrude, Trim, and Loft. It also introduced the concept of dimensioning. It was the first major release of AutoCAD to be released in 4-bit mode.
AutoCAD 3.5 SP1 (1992) released in July 1992, introduced a new dimensioning syntax, allowing the user to enter dimensioning information in a more natural manner.
AutoCAD 3.5 SP2 (1994) introduced

The cover is printed in Europe and I received a nice postcard of the location of the printing (Bruges, Belgium). The design is, as usual, fantastic – but my eyes were caught by the text of the book title. Do you see the word “font”. No, I am not reading “font” or “face” at all! I am now reading “fon”… French? Yes, that is the original word, and I love the way it looks. The publisher (Norguard) came up with this font for the title to capture the same spirit as “font” – it’s basically all about font. I even love the way the pages are printed – they are made from laminated cardboard and a thin white paper printed on both sides. There are no pages, but I am going to save it for a drawing later. It’s a shame that there is no binding, because it would have been perfect for a family of books. The only problem is that I want to print more of the same design, so that the books have a more interesting cover. I will most likely make it a personal project, but I will need to have a new cover printed.
Thank you very much for your attention, and don’t forget to check the link above. I will post the finished book after Easter. After #ABBtoBedford came out of nowhere to victory and I rode my first London to the Centre campaign to victory, I was ready to do another mad attempt. Only to learn that Laura was pregnant and in no fit state to ride a huge event! She won the taster ride in Bedfordshire and I waited for her to feel better, get back on her bike and allow me to race. I was thrilled when she was well enough to return to London and we rode and raced. We were so poor when I first got to Bedford and I rode the second time in my second kit, I had 7.5% of my pre-London kit. We managed to win the team classification with Laura in 5th (out of 7) and Ian in 10th place.
Laura was still pregnant in September and the team finished our Christmas holiday
