My reaction to the blurb on the cover was quite simple: ‘Oh dear,’ I thought, ‘this is just another tedious apologia for atheism.’ I did not want to read the book.
To see if I might have been mistaken, I’ve read The God Delusion, and, against my expectations, I found it quite enjoyable. The first time I read it, it took me about two hours to get to the end; but then, I already knew what the end would be. Now it’s only half an hour, and I’m now that much more prepared to read the rest of the book.
As I now have a far greater appreciation of Dawkins’s work, I’m sure that’s part of it. But I’m also quite sure that, at the time of my first encounter with The God Delusion, I was not yet open to the idea of reading something defending atheism. I suspect, however, that my mind was not receptive to what Dawkins was trying to say either.
I don’t want to dwell on what I think I didn’t like about The God Delusion. If you haven’t read it, you need to. There are some fascinating conversations in it, and even though it has points you might want to object to, it is far from being apologia for atheism. Quite the opposite. Many of the criticisms that are levelled at religion are equally levelled at theism, and perhaps more plausibly so. I won

The existence of intersubband transitions in photonic crystal structures has been suggested for the first time in ref., where it has been proposed to use them to perform on-chip subband filtering. The results of ref. are also extended here to the case of the presence of a free-electron gas. It is found that free-electron increases the transition-band absorption up to a factor of 20 in some cases.Genetics of ammonia metabolism and of hyperammonemic encephalopathy in man.
Hyperammonemia induces several biochemical changes in the brain, including increased intracellular concentrations of free calcium and adenosine triphosphate, increased activity of glutamine synthetase and glutamate dehydrogenase, and increased production of glutamate. A disorder of ammonia metabolism may be causally related to the pathogenesis of hyperammonemic encephalopathy. The genetic loci for the level of ammonia in plasma, certain enzymes of glutamine metabolism, and the cerebral concentration of free calcium, a key factor in the pathogenesis of hyperammonemia, have been identified. Heterozygous mutations in the gene encoding glutamate dehydrogenase alter its synthesis and change the intracellular and extracellular pools of glutamate in the brain, probably by modulating the expression of glutamine synthetase, the major ammonia-metabolizing enzyme. Mutations in either the SLC25A10 or the SLC25A12 genes (encoding for glutamine synthetase and glutamate dehydrogenase, respectively) have been linked to both hyperammonemia and neonatal onset encephalopathy. To study the evolution and natural history of hyperammonemic encephalopathy, we now have to identify families with this disorder. The genetic loci that have been identified should help in studying the pathogenesis of this disorder, and in devising new therapeutic strategies.Q:
